‘Twas the Week Before Winter Break: A Tradition of Joy and Appreciation

In this blog post, I share 5 ways I spread joy and appreciation in the week leading up to Winter Break.

As December rolls around, I’m reminded of one of my favorite traditions as an educational leader— a celebration of the week before Winter Break. It’s no secret that these final days of the semester bring a whirlwind of energy. Students are buzzing with excitement, educators are working hard to wrap up tasks, and everyone is counting down the days to some well-deserved rest. Over the years, I’ve found a way to bring a little extra joy and appreciation to my team during this time, a tradition inspired by a humorous and relatable poem I stumbled across early in my career: ‘Twas the Week Before Christmas Break by Amy Oelschlager.

In my first year as a principal, I felt the weight of those final days leading up to Winter Break. Despite the festive activities we already had in place—like Secret Elf exchanges—I felt compelled to do something different to lift spirits and show appreciation for my hard-working staff. That’s when I remembered the poem and decided to create something unique from it.

I rewrote the poem in five parts, pairing each segment with a small gesture of appreciation for my staff over the course of five days. That first year, it was something I did entirely on my own. As the years went by, the tradition grew and evolved, with contributions from my leadership team and adaptations to meet the circumstances of each year—like drive-thru surprises during the COVID years.

This tradition has become a highlight of my leadership journey, a way to spark joy and foster camaraderie while showing my gratitude for the incredible work of my team. Each year, I adapt the activities to suit the moment and find creative ways to fund them, whether through PTO support, community partnerships, or a little out-of-pocket generosity.

Here’s a glimpse of this year’s version of ‘Twas the Week Before Winter Break, which I hope inspires you to start your own tradition:

2024 Edition:

“‘Twas the week before Winter Break and all through the school,The staff was amazing, keeping it cool. So, each day this week, a surprise is in store,To celebrate you all and give a little more!”

Day 1: A Gift for the Mind“On the first day of giving, something to ignite your fire:A mini-resource book to inspire!”(Each staff member receives a professional resource or motivational book.)

Day 2: A Sweet Treat“On the second day of giving, something sweet and neat:Enjoy your favorite candy as a treat!”(A small table set with a variety of candy bars to choose from.)

Day 3: A Break for You“On the third day of giving, a little extra rest:An extended lunch is always the best!”(Staff can sign up for a 30-minute extended lunch while the leadership team covers their classes or duties.)

Day 4: A Warm Cup of Cheer“On the fourth day of giving, let’s bring some cheer:A hot cocoa bar is waiting near!”(The lounge is transformed into a hot cocoa station with all the fixings.)

Day 5: A Festive Feast“On the fifth day of giving, let’s finish with style:A nacho bar lunch to make you smile!”(The team enjoys a fully stocked nacho bar during their lunch break.)

This simple yet meaningful tradition reminds me of the power of appreciation. Small gestures can have a big impact on morale and culture, reinforcing the bonds that make a school community strong.

If you decide to adopt or adapt this tradition, I’d love to hear about it. Let’s continue spreading joy and appreciation in our schools during this special season.

Are you a leader or a leader of leaders? Leadership can feel isolating. Have you considered partnering with a coach to empower you and be a thought partner? If you’re ready to invest in yourself or the leaders you support, I’d love to be that partner!
