Student Engagement Doesn’t Have To Be Spooky

Eli Casaus

In this blog post, I share 3 Cooperative Learning Strategies for a fright-free classroom.

As educators, we know that keeping students engaged can feel like a daunting task, especially with the distractions and excitement that come with the fall season. But don’t let student engagement feel like a ghostly challenge! With Halloween just around the corner, it’s a great time to remind ourselves that engaging students doesn’t have to be scary. By using cooperative learning strategies, we can create a fun, supportive environment that keeps students connected and motivated without any of the spooky stress.

Here are three fright-free cooperative learning strategies to make engagement less "boo" and more "woo-hoo!"

1. Think-Pair-Share: Break the Ice, Not the Spirit!

Think-Pair-Share is a simple yet effective strategy that turns individual thinking into collaborative learning. After posing a question or problem to the class, allow students a few moments to think on their own before pairing up to share their ideas with a partner. Finally, pairs share their discussions with the larger group. This method helps even the most hesitant students participate without the fear of being put on the spot.

Why it’s not spooky:

  • Students get a chance to collect their thoughts before speaking, reducing anxiety.

  • The pair format fosters a sense of safety, making students feel comfortable sharing their ideas with a peer.

  • It encourages active participation from everyone, making engagement feel natural instead of forced.

2. Jigsaw: Everyone Has a Piece of the Puzzle

In the Jigsaw strategy, each student is assigned a piece of the content to master and then teach to their peers. This strategy builds interdependence and accountability as students rely on each other to complete the learning “puzzle.” After working in their “expert” groups to learn their section of the material, students regroup to share their knowledge with their original team.

Why it’s not spooky:

  • Students take ownership of their learning, turning content into something exciting rather than intimidating.

  • Everyone contributes, which fosters a strong sense of belonging and collaboration.

  • This strategy promotes depth of understanding as students become both learners and teachers, reducing the fear of failure.

3. Numbered Heads Together: No Tricks, Only Teamwork

Numbered Heads Together is a cooperative learning strategy that combines collaboration with accountability. Students work in small groups, with each group member assigned a number. After discussing a question or problem, the teacher randomly calls a number, and the student with that number responds on behalf of their group. This method encourages full participation and ensures that everyone is prepared to contribute.

Why it’s not spooky:

  • The group dynamic fosters a supportive environment, reducing the fear of being “wrong.”

  • Every student knows they might be called upon, so they stay engaged without the pressure of individual spotlighting.

  • It transforms participation into a team effort, ensuring no one feels isolated or out of place.

Halloween may bring spooky fun, but student engagement doesn’t have to be a fright! With cooperative learning strategies like Think-Pair-Share, Jigsaw, and Numbered Heads Together, you can make your classroom an engaging space where students feel safe, supported, and excited to participate. Let’s focus on creating learning experiences that make every student want to “join in on the fun”—no tricks, just treat-worthy engagement!

Happy Halloween and happy engaging! 🎃
